Boil Boil Toil & Trouble

Nicole’s doctor appointment yesterday has led to some new medical routines at home. The doctor is thinking MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and gave her the anti-biotics as if she has it but said that when the culture comes back and she sees the progress the boil has made on Wednesday she’ll know more and can change medications if necessary.

Nicole is antsy during a diaper change and clamps her legs together like a vice because she expects it to be sensitive but if you leave her diaper on and just push the elastic aside (it’s on the inside of her leg) she doesn’t really care what you do. Problem is that now that it’s bandaged it’s hard to get to fully if her diaper is still on.

We have to put warm compresses on it “many” times a day (“as often as possible”) which in our world will mean 3 times (morning, lunch & bedtime), try to massage more “stuff” out of it, put a topical medicine on and bandage it with gauze and tape, and then give her an oral medicine 2X/day that she doesn’t like at all (I tasted it and it is horrible). So far this process has happened twice since the appointment and has been a challenge on all fronts but eventually she gives in or gets to tired of fighting it.

Hopefully this gets easier as she gets used to it happening. When we’re not messing with it she’s oblivious, plays, gets carried, etc. with no problems. Her appetite has reduced due to stress though.

I still can't believe how awful this sounds. I almost want to gag just thinking about what it must be like to take care of it. Hang in there!!

Poor thing. Sounds like fighting with her to get her to take her meds is worse, or at least more time consuming, than fighting with my cats.

Hope this heals quickly.

Karen,

There is an "old" ointment remedy we used for years in our house for glass in your foot or splinters, and we also use it for boils. It was called "Rosin Salve" or now I believe they call it "Boil Ease". Anyway it is a very tacky and sticky ointment that will draw anything out of your skin with a band-aid over it, even infection that is associated with a boil. Maybe you are already using it, or something like it, but if not, Pharmacists know what it is. I have never seen anything work better that this stuff. Let me know... Good Luck

Good Lord, I hope it turns out not to be MRSA! I didn't think she'd actually have it!
Good luck, I hope she gets better soon, and I'm thinking of y'all!

Hey doll, Sorry to hear Nic is having a rough time. Ry had a couple of bad medications, the pharmacy was able to 'mix-in' a flavor to help with the taste. Another trick....sad but true, I used to let ry chase the medicine with a piece of chocolate as 1) a reward for good behavior for taking the medicine, and 2) as a way to get rid of the taste quickly. A third trick, sometimes it has to do with how you give the medicine....spoon, eye dropper, syringe? Ryan like the 'big boy spoon' over anything else. Not sure if any of that will help, but I do know what it is like to get creative with the meds! Good luck and yell if you need anything!
